Guide Center

Where to go next on the forum, how to ask for a critique without getting brushed off, and which threads to read first if you are new to posting your work.

Reaching a person, not a queue

The Guide Center is where most questions get answered before anyone has to write in. If you have already read the posting rules for critique threads and still need a hand, here is how to get one.

Email the moderators

Best for account trouble, a thread that needs moving, or a critique post that broke the rules by accident. Write from the address you registered with so we can find you.

Phone during studio hours

Weekdays between 09:00 and 16:00. Useful if you are organising a Saturday plein air meetup and need a quick answer about a location or a rain plan.

Post in the help board

For anything the wider community can answer: paper that takes charcoal without shredding, gesso drying times in coastal air, or how to photograph a print on a grey day.

What to expect, timewise

  • Moderator email: usually within one working day, longer over weekends when people are out drawing.
  • Phone: answered live during studio hours, otherwise leave a message and we call back the next morning.
  • Help board posts: replies come from members, so timing depends on who is online that evening.
  • Reports on a critique thread: looked at within 24 hours, since those rules exist to keep feedback honest.

Before writing in, the Guide Center and the terms page cover most of what gets asked twice.

Still finding your way around the boards?

The Guide Center is where the forum explains itself. If you have landed here from a search or a link someone sent you, this page tells you which sub-board fits what you are working on, how the critique section runs, and who to write to when something is unclear. Nothing here is a rulebook for its own sake. It exists so you can post without guessing.

Send a note and we will point you to the right thread, or answer directly if the question is short. Expect a reply within a day or two, usually sooner on weekdays.

What a message gets you

  • A straight answer on where to post Beginner questions, works in progress, printmaking, plein air meetups, studio diaries. Tell us what you are making and we will name the board.
  • Critique posting rules, in plain language What to include in a critique request, how to describe your materials, and why a photo of the work in daylight matters more than a tidy caption.
  • Local detail when it applies Life drawing sessions around Cape Town and Johannesburg, Saturday plein air plans, and how coastal humidity changes drying times for gesso and oil grounds.
  • A human on the other end No ticket queue. Write to the address on the left and someone who draws will read it.
